Steckler Shines In First Day of FGCU Classic

The Leathernecks were topped by Albany and West Virginia

Fort Myers, Fla.- The Western Illinois volleyball team dropped its first two matches of the FGCU Classic against Albany (3-0) and West Virginia (3-0). Mackenzie Steckler had an impressive day, as the sophomore recorded 19 kills (3.17 per set) while hitting .571.  

GAME ONE

The Leathernecks dropped the first match of the day, 3-0, to Albany. Mackenzie Steckler was impressive against the Great Danes, as she led the team in kills with 11 and hit at a .667 clip.

Western Illinois had trouble stopping Albany's momentum after the Great Danes jumped out to a quick 10-4 lead in the opening set and fell 25-15. The second set was the closest Western Illinois got to the Great Danes as the Purple and Gold fell by two, 25-23. Down 7-4 in the second set, the Leathernecks put together five-straight points knot the score at nine. Midway through the game, WIU found itself down 20-14 but climbed back to pull with one point, 21-20. 

Trying to force a fourth set, Western Illinois fell in the third set 25-15. In the match, Johnson finished with 18 assists, while Cassie Hunt recorded seven.

GAME TWO

Western Illinois suffered its second loss of the day to the West Virginia Mountaineers, 3-0. For the Leathernecks, it was the first matchup against a Power 5 opponent since Sept. 2, 2016, against Iowa.

The Leathernecks battled early and took the early 6-4 advantage. The Mountaineers stopped the Leathernecks' momentum and rattled off seven-straight points and took the 11-6 lead. The Purple and Gold were able to pull within two at 20-18, but fell 25-21.

In the second set, the Mountaineers jumped out 11-5, and the Leathernecks were not able to slow down the West Virginia offense. Up 21-17, the Mountaineers won the final four points to take the set, 25-17.  Western Illinois fell in the last game of the match, 25-18.

Steckler continued her impressive day as she recorded a team-high eight kills while recorded a hitting percentage of .462. Claire Grove finished with 22 digs.

Western Illinois returns to the court tomorrow (Sept. 8) at 9:30 a.m. against Florida Gulf Coast.
