Western Looks to Repeat Success at ORU

After claiming its first series win over Oral Roberts earlier this season, the Leathernecks look to repeat the success on the road this weekend.

MACOMB, Ill. - After claiming its first series win over Oral Roberts earlier this season, the Western Illinois baseball team looks to repeat the success on the road this weekend.
 
The three-game series begins Friday at 6:30 p.m. Saturday's game is scheduled for 2 p.m. and Sunday's at 1 p.m.
 
Game one will be streamed on ESPN3 and the other two on ORU Sports Network.

Last Outing
Western held SIUE to zero hits through the first 6.2 innings of play Wednesday, while padding its lead to eight unanswered runs. The Cougars scored two in the ninth inning on a two-out, 2-2 pitch and fell 8-2.  
 
Three Leathernecks had a perfect day at the plate in Bailey Montgomery (2-for-2), Alex Dorethy (2-for-2) and Drue Galassi (3-for-3), and Jack Carberry picked up the win in his first career start.
 
Freshman Szn
Western's freshmen have posted stellar numbers in their inaugural campaign. Pitchers Carberry and Jace Warkentien recently combined for 6.2 innings of hitless baseball against SIUE, and all nine newbies have seen action this season.

 
  • Jordan Mikel and Carberry each have wins on the season
  • Alex Dorethy has served as both a reliever (2.30 ERA/ 15.2 IP) and designated hitter (.323 BA / 11 RBI)
  • Dillon Sears is the Leathernecks' regular second baseman with 26 starts in 30 games played
  • Caleb Jacobs has split play between right field and first base in 17 starts

Head Coach Ryan Brownlee is one win away from 100 in his career. He joined Western before the start of the 2013 season, and currently ranks fourth all-time in program history in wins.
 
Keep it Going
Senior shortstop Johnathan Fleek is the lone Leatherneck to start every game this season. He ranks third on the team in hits with nine RBIs and is managing a career-high .971 fielding percentage.
 
Fleek joins Deion Thompson as the only two players to have appeared in all 32 games.
 
Scouting the Opposition
In the teams' first meeting (April 7-8), Western celebrated its first series win over ORU, 2-1. The Leathernecks defeated the Golden Eagles, 8-2 and 1-0, and dropped game two, 5-4.
 
ORU sits atop The Summit League standings with a conference mark of 13-5. Senior Noah Cummings leads the team with 39 RBIs and is followed by Spencer Henson who adds 32 on a ORU-best .379 batting average.
 
On Deck
The Leathernecks head to Iowa Tuesday for a 6:05 p.m. ballgame.
