Leathernecks Begin Second Half of Summit League Play

Western will square off against North Dakota State in a three-game series in Omaha.

MACOMB, Ill.
- The Western Illinois baseball team begins the second half of Summit League play Friday with a three-game set against North Dakota State. Each outing begins at 1 p.m., and in a change of venue, will be held inside Seymour Smith Park on the campus of fellow league competitor Omaha. 

Last Outing
The Leathernecks struck first with two runs scored in the first inning but struggled for any additional support in a 9-2 setback at Bradley. 

Western loaded the bases twice in the opening and sixth innings. 

•    Alex Dorethy recorded WIU's lone RBI
•    After a stellar debut at SIUE, Austin Emanuel took the mound in the seventh inning and retired the side with two strikeouts and a foul out; it marked the only three-up, three-down inning for a Western pitcher
•    Behind the plate, CJ Schaeffer caught a runner stealing third and picked off another at second; he now ties for first in The Summit League in runners caught stealing (10)

Scouting the Opposition
Western played host to North Dakota State in its home-opening, league-opening weekend, and took the series, 2-1. The Leathernecks shutout NDSU, 2-0, in game one, dropped game two in 10 innings, 2-1, and captured the series win, 6-3, in the finale. 

•    Deion Thompson led the Leathernecks with four hits and two runs while Justin Fitzpatrick, Bailey Montgomery and Steve McShane each registered a pair of RBIs
•    Montgomery went 4-for-5 against the Bison
•    Eight Western pitchers appeared in the series and seven yielded no earned runs; Dunne pitched a team-high eight innings and allowed three hits while striking out seven; Koch picked up the win in the 2-0 shutout behind six innings, three hits, and four strikeouts 

The Bison are currently 13-16 on the season including a 6-7 mark in league play.

SIUE will visit Alfred D. Boyer Stadium Wednesday at 4 p.m.
