Leathernecks Finish Third At Ball State Sunshine Invitational

Western Illinois had three golfers pick up final round wins.

Bridget Connolly won her match in all three rounds.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — After a sitting in fourth after the first two rounds, Western Illinois was able to bounce back and finish the third and final round with a trio of individual match play wins.

After picking up a pair of wins through the first two rounds on the first day, Bridget Connolly remained perfect through the final round, as she defeated Xavier's Grace Howie on the final hole of match play. Other Leathernecks who picked up match play wins were Alex Krehbiel, who defeated IUPUI's Nicole Howard (7&6), and Nicole Hamilton-Cross, who beat IUPUI's Sara Saetre (8&5).

Allie Leingang and Ball State's Manon Tounalom halved in their match on the final day.

"We had three great wins and one halved match that went until the final hole," said head coach Lia Biehl Lukkarinen. "Nicole came from behind to win on 16 and Alex won easily through 12 holes. Bridget birdied the final hole to beat her Xavier opponent and Allie, after a close battle, tied her match. It was very exciting to watch. We played and putted better today. This event was a great warmup for our next event in Texas."

The Leathernecks return to action Feb. 26-27, as they travel to Corpus Christi, Texas for the Islander Spring Classic.
