Leathernecks Drop Tilt Versus Denver

Melanie Patenaude recorded 11 kills

MACOMB, Ill.- The volleyball team dropped a 3-1 tilt to Denver to begin the final weekend of the season. Madeline Dieter and Melanie Patenaude were both impactful on offense as they hit .400 and .348, respectively.

The Leathernecks came out of the gate hot, as they took the first set of the match. WIU fell behind 4-2, but the Leathernecks scored four points in a row to take a 6-4 advantage. Denver took an 11-10 advantage, but the Purple and Gold responded and claimed a 17-14 lead. With a 23-18 advantage, Western Illinois won two of the next three points to take the set.

Denver quickly bounced back in the second set and won 25-19.  The Pioneers and Leathernecks were tied at eight points, but Denver made a late surge in the second frame to take the game. In the third set, the Leathernecks found themselves down 15-8 but slowed the Pioneers momentum and climbed to within one point, 18-17. Denver finished strong and won, 25-21.

Trying to force a fifth set, the Leathernecks fell just short. Down 6-4, the Leathernecks won four-straight points to take a two-point lead. The fourth set went back-and-forth until the Pioneers won two-straight to take a 23-20 lead and eventually took the took the final set, 25-21.

Patenaude led the Leathernecks with 11 kills while Cassie Hunt notched 22 assists. Claire Grove logged 12 digs. Western Illinois is back on the court for the final time of the season on Sunday against South Dakota State at 1 p.m.
