Western Unable to Sustain Early Edge in Setback vs. Omaha

The Leathernecks held a two-set lead over Omaha, but dropped the next three sets.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois volleyball team welcomed Omaha to Western Hall Tuesday (Nov. 6), where it jumped out to an early two-set lead before dropping the next three. The final stat line read 25-20, 25-21, 16-25, 20-25, and 4-15 in the 3-2 decision.

Shiah Sanders led the Leathernecks with 14 kills while Melanie Patenaude and Claire Grove paced the team in digs with 12 and 10, respectively.  Patenaude and Emma Norris also chipped in eight kills apiece.

There were 13 ties and five lead changes in the second set, the closest point differential of the match, as Western outlasted the Mavericks, 25-21. It was a tied set, 15-15, before Jaime Johnson stepped up to serve; the Leathernecks scored five straight points to never look back.

Omaha maintained an edge the entire third set and tied things at 2-2 in the fourth. The visitors held a four-point advantage, 10-6, in the set, but couldn't sustain as Western evened the score twice at 14 and 15-all.  Despite, the back and forth nature of the set, the Leathernecks never regained their lead, falling 25-20.

Just two more games remain on WIU's regular season schedule, and both will be at home against Denver (Nov. 9) and South Dakota State (Nov. 11).
