Leathernecks Topped By Bison, 3-1

Melanie Patenaude recorded her fifth double-double of the year

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois volleyball team fell to North Dakota State on Friday night (Oct. 5) 3-1 and fell to 1-17 (0-4) on the season.

The Bison took the first set 25-15 after making a run early that was capped off by a 5-2 run to take the game.  The Leathernecks came within five points after a Melanie Patenaude kill, but were unable to bounce back. North Dakota State jumped out to a quick 7-3 in the second set that was extended to 12-5 after four-straight Bison points. The Purple and Gold strung together six-straight points to pull cut the lead to three (20-17), but North Dakota State took the set 25-21.

Western Illinois took advantage of the extended break in between the second and third sets and captured an early 7-2 lead out of intermission. After a Bison timeout, North Dakota State took four-straight to pull within one, but a Patenaude kill ended the Bison run. In the middle of the set, Mariah Mitchell halted a 6-0 Bison run and put the Leathernecks up a pair at 15-13. The freshman hammered a ball from Jaime Johnson that became her third kill of the night. WIU ended the set winning four-straight points and took the set 25-17.

The Leathernecks could not force a fifth set after falling in the fourth 25-17.  Western Illinois pulled within three points (17-14) after back-to-back kills by Patenaude and Mackenzie Steckler, but the Bison outlasted the Leathernecks to win the match. 

Patenaude (15), Shiah Sanders (11) and Emma Norris (10) all had double-digit kills while Johnson recorded 43 assists. Claire Grove ended with 20 kills, while Patenaude completed a double-double with 10 digs. The Leathernecks are back on the court on Sunday (Oct. 7) at 1 p.m. against Oral Roberts.
