Leatherneck Volleyball Downed In Denver

Western Illinois fell 3-0.

DENVER - The Western Illinois volleyball team lost 3-0 to Denver on Sunday (Oct. 14) to fall to 1-20 (0-8) on the year while Denver improved to 18-1 (7-0) .
 
The Leathernecks fell behind in the first set, 9-2, but quickly bounced back to pull within two points, 11-9. Madeline Dieter and Mariah Mitchell aided the comeback with a kill apiece during the run. Denver pulled ahead and took the next eight points and eventually won the set 25-12.
 
Western Illinois played the Pioneers tough in the second game as the set was knotted at five points apiece in the early going. Denver won the next four points to take a 9-5 advantage, but WIU notched two straight to make the set 9-7. With the set 12-10 in Denver's favor, the Pioneers won seven straight to make it 19-10. The Pioneers took the second game, 25-13.
 
The third set was back-and-forth as the two teams were tied at five points to start the set. The Pioneers won the next four points and took a 9-5 lead in the middle of the third game. Western Illinois forced a Denver timeout after Melanie Patenaude and Shiah Sanders kills that made it 16-13. The Pioneers eventually pulled away and took the set 25-22.
 
Patenaude and Dieter ended with five kills apiece, while Cassie Hunt led the Leathernecks with 12 assists. The Purple and Gold are back on the court on Oct. 21 against Purdue Fort Wayne inside Western Hall.
