Western Illinois Travels To Iowa For Final Regular Season Meet

Leathernecks square off with Hawkeyes for seventh straight campaign

MACOMB, Ill. - After a pair of dual meets with Omaha and South Dakota, respectively, the Western Illinois men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrap up the regular season with a 6 p.m. dual meet Friday (Feb. 2) at the Iowa Hawkeyes.

ON THE HORIZON: Friday's meet with Iowa is Western Illinois' final gear-up for The Summit League Championships. The four-day Championships will take place from Feb. 14-17 in Indianapolis. Last year, the Leatherneck men came in fifth, while the women took sixth.

THE HAWK WILL NEVER DIE: For the seventh year in a row, Western Illinois will swim against their friends from Iowa City. The Leatherneck women bested Iowa in a 2014 dual meet, winning 123-83. Last season, Western Illinois' men lost 145-58 and the women fell 161-49 in their dual meet with the Hawkeyes.

WE JUST WANT TO TAKE OUR TIME: It took 48 days for the Western Illinois women to compete in a meet between their Dec. 2 dual meet with Truman State and their Jan. 20 dual meet against Northern Iowa. For the Leatherneck men, it was 56 days between competitions from Truman State to a Jan. 27 meet at South Dakota. their longest gap in meets since at least the 2004-05 campaign.

LAST TIME OUT: Four different Leathernecks won individual events Saturday (Jan. 27), but both the Western Illinois women (177-103) and men (191-92) stumbled in a dual meet at the South Dakota Coyotes. Miranda Mathus won the 200-meter free (2:13.39) by more than four seconds. Erica Hagen swam to victory in the 100-meter breast (1:14.97). The Leatherneck men were fronted by Phillip Kudela, who sprinted for first by less than a half-second in the 400-meter free at 4:15.46. Samir Almhiemid soared to first in the 100-meter fly with a time of 59.44.
