Leathernecks Edged By SEMO In Labor Day Match

Western competed in its fourth 5th set match of the season

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.- The Western Illinois volleyball team (3-4) was edged by Southeast Missouri State (5-2) on Labor Day afternoon in five sets (25-14, 18-25, 8-25, 25-21, 13-15).

"We did a good job of starting the match out strong and keeping control of the momentum," said Head Coach Kelly Richardson. "We have to do a better job of keeping that control throughout the match. I'm proud of the way we came back and fought in the fourth and fifth sets. We look forward to getting back in the gym and preparing for this upcoming weekend."

The Leathernecks jumped out to a quick start in the first set, behind six Emma Norris kills. The Purple and Gold went up early, 4-1, and did not look back. Once up 20-14, Western won five straight points to win the set.

In the second set, Western battled early, after getting down by three points. After an Emilee Dechant kill and an ace from Makenzie Bouse, the Leathernecks were after to tied up the set at nine points apiece. The Redhawks found momentum later in the set, and put together six of seven points, and won the set, 25-18.

The Leathernecks could not find momentum in the third set and were outlasted by the Redhawks, 25-8. In the set, Abby Knoop recorded her first kill as a Leatherneck, assisted by fellow freshman, Cassie Hunt.

Western rallied quickly after the third set, and won the fourth 25-21. The set was back and forth the entire way, with Western striking last. With the score 22-21, the Leathernecks won the last three points by the way of a Norris kill and a Shalyn Greenhaw ace.

Because the Purple and Gold won the fourth set, they forced a fifth, a set that is only played to 15 points. The Leathernecks started fast, going up 6-2 and forcing a SEMO timeout. The Redhawks were able to put together a rally, eventually going up 13-11. The Leathernecks would not go away, however, tying the score up at 13. Southeast Missouri State won the final two points, and took the match.

The Leathernecks prepare for the EIU Panther Invitational, Sept. 8-9. Western will play Chicago State, for the second time this season, on Friday at 6 p.m, Alabama A&M Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. and play host Eastern Illinois at 7 p.m.
