Volleyball Falls to Chicago State, 3-1

Shalyn Greenhaw records a double-double with 11 kills and 22 digs

CHARLESTON, Ill.- The Western Illinois volleyball team competed in it its first match of the EIU Invitational. The Leathernecks were edged by Chicago State, 18-25, 30-32, 26-24, 12-25. WIU looks to rebound against Eastern Illinois and Alabama A&M on Saturday (Sept. 9).

"We continue to struggle coming out and starting strong from the beginning. We see a lot of great things as we fight back, however we need to set a more positive tone early on," said Head Coach Kelly Richardson. "We need to continue focusing on the little details, and having confidence in our system. We look forward to getting back on the court tomorrow."

In set one, Western had trouble finding momentum early and eventually fell to the Cougars, 25-18. The Leathernecks were down 11-2 before fighting from behind and pulling within five points later in the set. Western won four of the last six points but not before Chicago State could reach 25.

The Leathernecks jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead, by the way of Shalyn Greenhaw and Shiah Sanders kills. After back-and-forth action, Chicago State tied it up at 19, and the set stayed within two points until the end of the match. The Cougars were on top 28-26, but due to attack errors by Chicago State and kills by Emma Norris and Aleezah Washington, the Leathernecks got in front 30-29. Chicago State was able to capture the next three points and win the set 32-30.

Western was not done after the first two sets, however, and was able to secure set three, 26-24. Down 6-2, the Leathernecks strung together three of the next four points, highlighted by a Washington ace and a Greenhaw kill. The Leathernecks were down 19-13 before they bagged six of the next seven points. Norris recorded nine of her team-high 16 kills in the sets. Western finished the set by beating the Cougars, 26-24.

WIU did not see much traction in the fourth set, after getting down 11-4 early in the set. The Leathernecks fell 25-15 in the set. Jaime Johnson recorded 32 assists in the match and Greenhaw recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 22 digs. Emilee Dechant logged 11 block assists to go along with a solo block.

The Leathernecks look to bounce back against Alabama A&M and host Eastern Illinois. First serve is set for 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
