Leathernecks Open Omaha Series with 14-4 Victory

Western captures road Summit League win in seven innings

OMAHA, Neb. – Western Illinois broke open a 5-0 game with a seven-run sixth inning and eventually finished off Omaha in seven innings, 14-4 on Friday afternoon. The Leathernecks doubled-up the Mavs in hits (14-7) as Ian Koch went the distance.

The victory marked the first Summit League road win by 10 or more runs since May 2014 (16-4 at South Dakota State).

The Leathernecks (8-19 overall, 5-5 Summit League) opened the scoring in the second with two runs. Chris Tschida doubled, took third on a throwing error and scored on Conner Currier's sacrifice bunt. Mitch Ellis later added a RBI single for a 2-0 lead.

Cord Church opened the third with a single. He scored when Tschida matched his career-high second double. Johnathan Fleek singled home Tschida to make it 4-0.

Western added another run in the fourth. Ellis lined his first triple of the year and scored on Church's fielder's choice RBI. Omaha threatened in its half of the fifth with consecutive one-out singles. However, Koch closed the door with a strikeout and then catcher Adam McGinnis picked a runner off base.

The Leathernecks blew the game open in the sixth. They loaded the bases with no one out. Drue Galassi drew a bases loaded walk, Currier scored on a wild pitch and Church brought home two runs on a single. Tschida later added a 2-run single then McGinnis capped off the scoring when he scored on a double play ball.

Omaha responded with four runs in its half of the frame to make it 12-4. Western would make it a 10-run advantage again in the seventh. Justin Fitzpatrick lined a sacrifice fly then the next at-bat McGinnis lined a RBI single.

Koch worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning to implement the run-rule.

Ellis' four hits set a career-high, doubling his previous best. His three runs also set a personal-high. Tschida matched a season-high with his three hits. He scored twice and drove in three.

Church matched a season-high of two hits. His two runs equaled a career-high and his three RBI set a new season-high.

Koch improved to 2-2 overall, going the distance for the second time in his career. He allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits in seven innings, walking one and striking out four.

Seven different Mavs (6-23, 4-6) had a hit. Corey Binger (3-5) allowed nine runs on nine hits in five innings.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday (April 8).
