Leathernecks Drop Game Two at Omaha

Steve McShane delivered career-high three hits

OMAHA, Neb.Steve McShane recorded a career-high three hits, but Omaha used two home runs to spur a 4-2 decision Saturday afternoon (April 8) in Summit League play.
 
Omaha got on the board in the first inning with a two-out solo home run by Grant Suponchick. In the fourth with two outs, a single was followed by a 2-run homer by Marcus Ethen.
 
The Mavs threatened for more in the fifth, loading the bases on a walk and two bunt singles with no one out. Preston Church got a line drive to Mitch Ellis at third, who doubled off the runner for two outs. After another walk loaded the bases, Church got out of the inning on a fielder's choice groundout.
 
Western (8-20 overall, 5-6 Summit League) got a run in its half of the sixth. McShane and Adam McGinnis singled to start the inning. Johnathan Fleek's one-out RBI single made it 3-1.
 
Church worked out of another jam in the Omaha sixth. The leadoff batter advanced to third on an error. The senior left-hander got a strikeout, groundout and strikeout to keep Omaha off the scoreboard.
 
Omaha (7-23, 5-6) loaded the bases in the eighth inning with two outs and used a walk to take a 4-1 lead.
 
In the ninth, Western eventually brought the tying run to the plate. It started when Dave Dobrinich reached on a fielder's choice, took second on a balk and scored on Ellis' RBI single. Ellis went to second on a passed ball but a groundout ended the game.
 
McShane got his career-high third hit with a single in the eighth. Ellis added three hits and McGinnis contributed two hits. Church (2-3) suffered the loss, giving up three runs on five hits in six innings. Connor Rektorski was charged for a run allowed on one hit in 1.2 innings of relief work.
 
Sam Murphy (2-4) gave up a run on six hits in seven innings of work. Suponchick worked the final two innings for his first save of the year.
 
The weekend finale is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Sunday (April 9).
