Leathernecks Fall at Southern Illinois

Johnathan Fleek led the Leathernecks with three hits

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Western Illinois tied the game early on at 2-2, but Southern Illinois would erupt for 10 runs over the final six innings in a 12-2 decision Saturday afternoon (March 4) in Carbondale.

Adam McGinnis lined a two-out double in the first but was stranded in scoring position. Down 1-0, Western threatened in the second inning. Johnathan Fleek singled to start the inning. He stole second with two outs and went to third on a wild pitch but the Leathernecks were unable to score the run.

Hunter Anderson hit a leadoff home run in the second to make it 2-0 Salukis. However, the Leathernecks staged a rally in the third.

Deion Thompson reached on an error with one out. Roman Visintine lined a double into the gap, allowing Thompson to score. McGinnis singled to put runners on the corners. Drue Galassi dropped down a sacrifice bunt to plate Visintine and tie the game at 2-all.

SIU regained the lead in its half of the inning. Loading the bases with two outs, Jake Hand hit a grand slam to put the Salukis up 6-2. The lead was extended in the fourth inning as two doubles led to three runs and a 9-2 advantage. SIU added three more runs in the sixth for what proved to be the final margin.

Visintine lined his team-leading second triple of the year with two outs in the fifth but was stranded in scoring position. Justin Fitzpatrick added a pinch-hit double in the ninth, part of Western's eight-hit effort.

Fleek led Western (0-9 overall) with a season-high three hits, and Visintine and McGinnis added two each.

Javin Drake (0-3) allowed nine runs on six hits in three innings. Carson Cheesman, Connor Rektorski, Colan Borchers and J.T. Baksha each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Nine different Salukis (6-4) accounted for their 12 hits. Michael Baird (3-0) gave up two unearned runs on six hits in seven innings. He struck out seven without a strikeout.
