Leathernecks Split Two Extra-Inning Games

Western tops Lipscomb, falls to Indiana in two extra-inning games Friday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Western Illinois split a pair of extra-inning games on the opening day of the Memphis Tournament (March 10). The Leathernecks topped Lipscomb by a score of 3-1 in eight innings before being edged out by Indiana 1-0, also in eight innings. With the decisions, Western moves to 7-12 on the year.

GAME ONE: Western Illinois 3, Lipscomb 1 (8)

In the top of the second, Aly Compton hit a two-out single to center field and advanced to second base when Taylor Messer walked at the next at bat. Compton then scored following an RBI single from Jasmine Lara to give Western a 1-0 lead after two frames.

Both sides were kept off the board until the bottom of the fifth inning when Lipscomb (16-6) reached base following a walk and a single. A Leatherneck error then allowed the Bison to score and tie the game up 1-1.

Neither team was able to take the lead in the final two innings. In the bottom of the seventh, Lipscomb hit a double and the game-winning run was aboard. However, during the next at bat, the Bison popped into a double play to send the game into extras.

Per the international tiebreaker rule in the top of the eighth, Lara started at second base and moved to third following a ground out. Nina Maggio then came through with a single down the left field line, scoring Lara and putting Western ahead 2-1. The Leathernecks tacked on one more insurance run when Hailey Duwa singled to center field to score Maggio and put Western up 3-1.

Western Illinois retired Lipscomb in order in the bottom of the eighth to take the victory.

Payton Abbott pitched all eight innings, striking out seven batters and giving up three walks. The sophomore only allowed three hits and no earned runs for her second victory of the year. Six different Leathernecks garnered hits in the win, while Maggio, Duwa and Lara each had one RBI.

GAME TWO: Indiana 1, Western Illinois 0 (8)

It was a pitcher's dual through the first seven innings of play. Starting WIU pitcher Emily Ira limited the Hoosiers (7-13) to just two hits but the Leathernecks were held to one.

Western's lone hit came from Kelsey Marlow in the bottom of the third as she singled to right field and then stole second, but she was left stranded.

After seven innings of play, both teams found themselves tied at 0-0 as the Leathernecks headed into their second extra-inning game of the day.

Per the national tiebreaker rule, the Hoosiers placed one runner on second base in the top of the eighth and were able to score her following an RBI single up the middle to take a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, the tying run in Brittanee Knepper was placed on second. Knepper then moved to third following a sacrifice bunt from Aly Compton. The Leathernecks were then unable to get anything going the rest of the inning though.

Ira pitched eight innings and struck out 10 batters, the second-most in her career. She only allowed three hits, one walk and no earned runs.

Play at the Memphis Tournament continues tomorrow at 11:15 a.m. against Oakland and 8:15 p.m. against Buffalo.
