Emily Ira Sets Single-Game Strikeout Record as the Leathernecks Blank Oakland

Ira set a program-record 19 strikeouts on Saturday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Emily Ira set a new program record of 19 strikeouts in a single-game as the Western Illinois softball team topped Oakland (7-6) 2-0 on the first day of the Memphis Tournament (March 11). With the victory, the Leathernecks improve to 8-12 on the season.

The sophomore broke the previous record of 17 strikeouts by Veronica Wilson, set on May 1, 1993. Ira struck out 19 of the 22 batters she faced and gave up just one hit in the top of the seventh inning and walked none.

In the bottom of the fourth, Aly Compton reached on an error by the short stop. Kelsey Marlow then hit a two-out RBI triple to score Compton and give the Leathernecks a 1-0 lead.

After Ira struck out six consecutive batters in the fifth and sixth inning, Western Illinois tacked on one more insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Rachel Beatty bunted and reached first safely before advancing to second on an error. After she moved to third on a ground out, she scored when Holly Hoelting hit an RBI double to put Western ahead 2-0.

Ira would retire two of the final batters in the seventh inning via strikeouts as the Leathernecks blanked the Golden Grizzlies 2-0.

Marlow led the team with two hits and one RBI. Beatty, Ira and Hoelting also garnered base hits in the victory.

Tonight's game (March 11) originally scheduled for 8:15 p.m. against Buffalo, has been rescheduled for tomorrow (March 12) at 11:30 a.m. The Leathernecks then take on Memphis for the final game of the tournament at 3:30.
