Leathernecks Split on Final Day of Memphis Tournament

Western Illinois falls to Buffalo before topping Memphis in extras

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Western Illinois softball team split its final two game of the Memphis Tournament on Sunday (March 12). After falling to Buffalo 3-2, the Leathernecks bounced back to top Memphis 4-2 in extras. With the decision, Western moves to 9-13 on the year.

GAME ONE: Buffalo 3, Western Illinois 2

In the bottom of the third inning, Buffalo (3-15) took a two-run lead following a single to right field. The Bulls tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fifth following an RBI single up the middle.

Down 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Kelsey Marlow and Jasmine Lara hit back-to-back singles. The two then scored following a pinch hit single up the middle from Hailey Duwa to put Western within one. Rachel Beatty then walked to load the bases, but the rally fell short as Bulls topped the Leathernecks 3-2.

Lara went 2-for-2 on the day with a run scored. Brooke Stulga got the start in the circle, pitching 4 and two-thirds innings with two strikeouts and three earned runs. Payton Abbott threw 1 and one-third innings of relief, striking out two.

GAME TWO: Western Illinois 4, Memphis 2

Lara was the first Leatherneck on base in the top of the first when she drew a two-out walk. She then scored following an RBI triple from Marlow to right center, giving Western a 1-0 lead.

Memphis (11-10) quickly responded in the bottom of the first with and RBI single up the middle to tie the game, 1-1.

The game remained tied until the top of the fifth inning. After Emily Ira reached on an error, Beatty singled through the right side to advance her to second. Ira then crossed home following an RBI single down the left field line from Nina Maggio.

In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, the Tigers hit an RBI double to send the game into extra innings, tied 2-2.

In the top of the eighth, Beatty was placed on second per the international tiebreaker rule. After she moved to third following a sacrifice bunt from Maggio, she was brought home when Marlow smacked an RBI double to left center. Marlow and Hoelting then switched places following a double, putting Western ahead 4-2.

The Leathernecks sent the Tigers down in order behind two strikeouts from Ira in the bottom of the eighth en route to the 4-2 victory.

Ira pitched a complete eight innings, striking out 11 Tigers with two earned runs and no walks. Marlow went three-for-four with a double and a triple.
