Murray State Tops WIU Softball Twice on Wednesday

Racers top Leathernecks by scores of 2-1 and 5-1

MURRAY, Ky. – Western Illinois softball continued its spring break trip with a doubleheader at Murray State Wednesday (March 15). The Racers topped the Leathernecks 2-1 after a walk-off single in game one, and then topped WIU 5-1 in the second contest.

WIU falls to 9-15 on the year, while Murray State improves to 22-4 overall.

GAME ONE: Murray State 2, Western Illinois 1

After two scoreless innings in which WIU pitcher Emily Ira racked up four strikeouts, the Leathernecks were able to strike first in the top of the third inning.

Ira reached first on an error and advanced to second base with only one out. Two batters later, Rachel Beatty ripped a two-out RBI single through the right side to put Western up 1-0.

The Leathernecks would continue to hold the Racers scoreless up until Murray State tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth. The Racers' Maggie Glass hit a leadoff single and advanced to third on back-to-back sacrifice hits before MSU's Erika Downey hit an RBI single to center field, scoring Glass.

Rachel Beatty led off the top of the sixth with a single before stealing second for the Leathernecks, followed by Nina Maggio mirroring Beatty with a single and stolen base of her own. WIU's threat would come to an end, however, after a pair of strikeouts and a caught stealing ended the inning.

The Racers were unable to score any runs in the bottom of the sixth and Leathernecks were scoreless in the top of the seventh before Murray State hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to capture the victory.

Ira suffered the loss but added eight strikeouts to her season total during game one. She allowed nine hits and two runs, both earned. Ira now has 96 strikeouts on the season.

Beatty and Maggio led WIU at the plate, each going 2-of-3. Beatty also finished with the Leathernecks' lone RBI.

The Racers were led by Downey who went 2-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs.

GAME TWO: Murray State 5, Western Illinois 1

In game two of the doubleheader, Murray State grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run from Jessica Twaddle.

The Leathernecks used a solo shot of their own to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning courtesy of Holly Hoelting. The home run to center field marked Houlting's fourth of the season.

Murray State didn't wait long to answer, though, as the Racers scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth and jumped out to a 5-1 advantage.

Neither team would score another run during the remainder of the game as the Racers closed out their 22nd win of the season.

Seven Leathernecks recorded a hit with Maggio leading the way with two.

Payton Abbott started the game for WIU at pitcher and went 3.2 innings, recording four strikeouts and giving up six hits and five runs, all of which were earned. Brooke Stulga came in for relief and pitched 2.1 innings without giving up a run and allowed three hits.

Murray State also had seven players record at least one hit, and had four different players record an RBI.

The Leathernecks return to action this weekend (March 17-19) with UT Martin's Skyhawk Hampton Inn Classic. WIU is scheduled to play one game on Friday, two on Saturday, and conclude tournament action with one game on Sunday.
