Western Illinois Drops Road Contests Against Samford, UT Martin

The Leathernecks fell in both games at the Skyhawk Hampton Inn Classic.

MARTIN, Tenn. – The Western Illinois softball team dropped a pair of Saturday (March 18) games against Samford and UT Martin at the Skyhawk Hampton Inn Classic. The Leathernecks fall to 9-17 overall, while Samford (8-18) and UT Martin (18-7) both improve their respective records with the win.

The Leathernecks return to action Sunday (March 19) with another doubleheader. Western begins with a 10 a.m. matchup against Samford, followed by a 3 p.m. showdown against UT Martin.

GAME ONE: Samford 6, Western Illinois 0
Samford quickly got on the board with a single to left center in the first inning, but was held scoreless until the sixth and seventh innings.

The Leathernecks found themselves in scoring position in the bottom of the second when Kelsey Marlow singled though the left side and then stole second. But a double play, followed by a pop fly in the Bulldogs' outfield retired Western Illinois.

In the top of the sixth, the Leathernecks found themselves in a hole after the Bulldogs advanced a runner to third base off a sacrifice bunt. Shortly after, a double to right center made it a 3-0 game.

Western Illinois found itself in scoring position after Jasmine Lara singled up the middle. For the next at bat, Sydney Hollings was walked, which advanced Lara to second. Back-to-back fly outs erased the Leathernecks' chances for a run, and forced a seventh inning.

A single followed by back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Samford in the top of the seventh. That preceded a pair of singles and a walk that added three more Bulldog runs. Western Illinois tried to answer in the bottom of the seventh, but could not get anybody on base to end the game with a 6-0 decision.

Emily Ira (4-9) finished the day with nine strikeouts, while Jasmine Lara and Kelsey Marlow both recorded a hit.

GAME TWO: UT Martin 4, Western Illinois 1
Western Illinois dropped a 4-1 decision to the home team UT Martin, after the Skyhawks were able to get on the board with runs in the second, third and sixth innings.

In the top of the second Kelsey Marlow made it to first after being walked on a full count. Following a fly out, Marlow was able to steal second and put her team in scoring position, but two consecutive strikeouts retired the Leathernecks' batters.

On a 2-2 count, UT Martin homered out into left field to go up 1-0. The Skyhawk lead increased to 2-0 after scoring on an unearned run due to an error.

In the top of the sixth, Western was able to pull to within one after Taylor Messer made it to first on a walk. Amanda Manton came in to pinch run for Messer, and on the ensuing at-bat, Jasmine Lara made it to first on a Skyhawk error, which sent Manton to second. Two quick outs on a double play put Rachel Beatty at the plate, and she made it to first on a walk, which sent Lara to second.

When Marlow came up for her next at bat, she singled up the middle to advance Beatty to second and send Lara home, which cut UT Martin's lead at 2-1.

The Leathernecks, however, were unable to keep the Skyhawks scoreless for a chance to gain the lead, after a double to right center, followed by a home run to right field resulted in two RBI's and put Western in a 4-1 hole to close out the sixth.

Western Illinois had a chance in the top of the seventh, but a pop up, followed by a pair of fly outs ended the game.

Payton Abbot (2-4) recorded a pair of strikeouts, while Kelsey Marlow recorded a hit, an RBI and one stolen base.
