Leathernecks Fall To Samford, UT Martin On Final Day Of Skyhawk Hampton Inn Classic

The Leathernecks fell 8-4 to Samford, and then lost a close 4-3 game in extra innings at UT Martin.

MARTIN, Tenn. –  Western Illinois dropped a pair of road contests on the second day of the Skyhawk Hampton Inn Classic (March 19). The Leathernecks (9-19 overall) fell to Samford 8-4 in the first game, and 4-3 to UT Martin in extra innings. Western Illinois will now shift its focus to Summit League action, with a three-game series against South Dakota (March 25).
 
GAME ONE: Samford 8, Western Illinois 4
Sam Ralphs sparked a big first inning for the Leathernecks, after she singled up the middle and then stole second. For the next at-bat, Kelsey Marlow was there for the cleanup, as she launched one over the left field fence to give the Leathernecks an early 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs, however, answered with a two-run homer to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first.
 
In the top of the third, Kelsey Marlow once again put the Leathernecks in scoring position, singling down the first base line and advancing her teammate Jasmine Lara to third. On the next pitch, Kelsey Marlow stole second. Western Illinois regained a 3-2 lead off a Samford wild pitch that sent Lara home.
 
The Bulldogs eventually tied it up at 3-3 in the bottom of the third off a single down the right field line for an RBI and advanced runners to second and third, but Payton Abbott recorded her fourth strikeout to retire the inning. Western Illinois eventually trailed 5-3 following a Bulldog single, followed by double to right center in the bottom of the fourth. The Leathernecks fell into a 7-3 hole after Samford homered to send a pair of baserunners home.
 
Western Illinois loaded the bases in the top of the fifth, but only managed to get a run and cut Samford's lead at 7-4 after Brooke Stulga was walked, which sent Taylor Messer home.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, Samford loaded the bases and scored one run off a walk, which made it 8-4. The Leathernecks put themselves in scoring position when Sam Ralphs singled and then advanced to second on a wild pitch, but the Bulldogs were able to hold on for the win.
 
GAME TWO: UT Martin 4, Western Illinois 3
The Leathernecks fell into a 1-0 deficit after the Skyhawks got an RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the first inning.
 
Western put itself in scoring position after Aly Compton's single up the middle advanced Holly Hoelting to second base. Following a wild pitch that put two runners on second and third, Rachel Beatty's single down second base put the Leathernecks up 2-1 over the Skyhawks in the top of the fourth. UT Martin was able to answer with a double, followed by a home run to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
 
The scoring continued, as Meghan Henson rocketed a pitch over left center on a 3-1 count for a solo-shot home run. That played tied it all up at 3-3 in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, UT Martin put runners on first and second with two outs, but the Leathernecks were able to hold the Skyhawks scoreless in the inning to keep the score tied.
 
After a scoreless sixth and seventh inning from both sides, the game was decided in extra innings. In the top of the eighth, the Leathernecks put Lara in scoring position as she advanced to third base off Sam Ralphs sacrifice bunt. UT Martin, however, was able to get two more outs and get an opportunity for the win in the bottom of the eighth. The Skyhawks were able to advance a runner to third and seal the game by advancing a runner to home off a wild pitch.  
 
Emily Ira (4-10) finished the game with six strikeouts, while Meghan Henson recorded a home run and an RBI in the contest.
