Baseball Drops Opener at SEMO

Chris Tschida hit his first home run of the year

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Western Illinois scored the first run of the game, but from there it was all Southeast Missouri as the Leathernecks dropped the series opener on Friday afternoon (Feb. 24).

Both pitchers needed 10 or fewer pitches to get out of the first inning. Johnathan Fleek and Chris Tschida lined consecutive singles with one out in the second. Dave Dobrinich hit a ground rule double to give Western (0-5 overall) a 1-0 lead. From there, SEMO (3-2) scored 11 unanswered runs en route to the 22-2 decision.

The Redhawks scored six runs in the second and five runs in the third and sixth.

Tschida hit his first home run of the year (and seventh of his career) in the fourth inning for Western's other run scored.

Tschida, Fleek and Roman Visintine had two hits apiece. Visintine hit his first triple of the year and fourth in his career. Justin Fitzpatrick added his second career double and Adam McGinnis contributed a double as part of the team's nine hits in the game.

Matthew Sturchio (0-2) went the first two innings, allowing five earned runs on five hits. He struck out two and did not walk a batter. Sam Cottingham-Beard, Ben Sellers and Connor Rektorski all pitched in relief. Western's pitchers combined to strike out 12 Redhawks.

Connor Basler and Kylar Robertson each had four hits for SEMO. Clay Chandler (2-0) picked up the win allowing two runs on eight hits in six innings. Four Redhawk pitchers did not allow a walk and struck out nine.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 25).
