Leathernecks Thwarted by Late Rally

Adam McGinnis and Drue Galassi hit back-to-back homers in the first

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. Adam McGinnis and Drue Galassi hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning, but Southeast Missouri took the lead for good on an eighth inning homer to win 5-4 Saturday afternoon (Feb. 25) at Capaha Field.

Mitch Ellis singled with one out in the first and McGinnis followed with a 2-run shot to right, his first homer of the year. Galassi followed with a solo blast to right, his second homer of the year, for a 3-0 lead. It was the first time since March 2008 the Leathernecks delivered back-to-back home runs.

Ian Koch turned a double play in the third, but SEMO drew a two-out walk and got a run thanks to two throwing errors on a failed pick off attempt.

The Redhawks added another run in the sixth on a two-out RBI single. Western got that run back in its half of the seventh.

Deion Thompson led off with a single and eventually stole second base. He went to third on a groundout, and scored when Cord Church executed a squeeze bunt.

SEMO made it 4-3 in its half of the seventh on a RBI single. The Redhawks got the tying run on base on a fielding error in the outfield. Tristen Gagan delivered a 2-run homer to take the lead for good.

Western threatened in the ninth. Pinch-hitter Dave Dobrinich walked with one out. On a failed pickoff attempt he took second. But a groundout and strikeout ended the game.

McGinnis, Galassi and Thompson each had two hits, accounting for six of the eight. Koch earned the no-decision after allowing one earned run on four hits in six innings. He walked four but struck out a career-high seven batters. Preston Church (0-1) was charged for two earned runs on three hits in two innings in relief.

Dan Holst had two hits and two runs scored. Carlos Vega (1-0) pitched 2.2 innings of relief giving up one run on two hits. Matthew Wade pitched the ninth for his third save.

Game three of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m.
