Baseball Drops Finale at Southeast Missouri

Javin Drake goes six innings and Johnathan Fleek hits his first homer as a Leatherneck

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. Javin Drake pitched six innings and Johnathan Fleek hit a solo home run but Western Illinois dropped the series finale at Southeast Missouri 5-1 on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 26).

The Redhawks (5-2 overall) got a pair of doubles in the second inning to go ahead 1-0 and then took a 2-0 lead on a solo homer in the fourth.

Fleek cut the deficit in half when he started the fifth inning with a home run to left field.

SEMO got a run back in its half of the fifth with a solo homer. Western (0-7) threatened in the sixth when Mitch Ellis lined a double to left but the Redhawks retired the final 10 batters of the game in order to close out the series sweep.

Drake (0-2) allowed three runs on six hits in six innings. Carson Cheesman pitched 1.2 innings of relief, his first appearance since 2015. Nate Westfahl got the final out of the eighth.

Fleek, Ellis and Adam McGinnis recorded a hit.

"We got two quality starts from Ian (Koch) and Javin (Drake). They both carried over their outings from last weekend. Javin only made a couple of bad pitches that get hit well. It was great to see Carson Cheesman on the mound again. All of our guys coming off injuries from last year: J.T. (Baksha), Pete (Minella), Preston (Church), Drue (Galassi), Fitz (Justin Fitzpatrick), and Deion (Thompson) have all comeback healthy, which is a huge boost," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "SEMO's starter did a nice job of keeping the ball down. He really only elevated a couple of pitches and Johnathan put a good swing on one and got it out. Pitchers like him, you have to be disciplined to wait for a pitch you can do damage on. It was really our first game all season that we haven't had consistent hard contact up and down our line-up. We will have a great week of practice and it is just a matter of time for our team."

Trevor Ezell and Dan Holst each hit a home run and accounted for two hits apiece. Justin Murphy (1-0) allowed one run on three hits in seven innings. He struck out three. Carlos Vega pitched two hitless innings of relief to earn the save.

Western returns to action on Friday (March 3) at Southern Illinois. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
