Malachi Adams Sets Program Record in 60-meter Dash

Adams breaks 15-year old program record Saturday night

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Freshman Malachi Adams set a Western Illinois program record in the 60-meter dash as the track and field team competed at the Orange & Blue Open on Saturday (Feb. 18). The meet served as the final tune up before The Summit League Championships next week.

Adams raced to a new personal best of 6.76 in the 60, placing first overall. The previous program record of 6.77 was set by Desmond Bynum in 2002. Adams' former personal best of 6.78 ranked second all-time.

In total, the Leathernecks claimed 18 top-five finishes on the day. In the weight throw, Abbi Smith placed second overall with a season best of 45-7 1/4. Jasmine Swanagan finished right behind her with a mark of 44-7.

Khalyia Lawson placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 37-11 1/4. Matt Simmons also recorded two top-five finishes in the long jump (third, 21-0) and triple jump (44-1 1/2).

Alyssa Johnson clocked a near personal record of 58.37 in the 400 to place third.

Brad Walls set a new personal best of 56-1 in the weight throw to place third, while Brady Shows tossed 47-3, good for fifth place.

In the sprints, Charles Morrow placed fourth overall with a time of 7.00. Both Josh Kirby and Josh Thomas made the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, placing fourth and fifth with times of 8.34 and 8.50, respectively.

The Leathernecks will now turn their focus to The Summit League Championships on Feb. 24-25. The two-day meet is hosted by South Dakota State in Brookings, S.D.
