Hagen Strong As Western Opens Season At IUPUI

Junior wins two events in dual meet

INDIANAPOLIS – The Western Illinois swimming and diving teams suffered a loss in their 2017-18 season opener on Saturday (Oct. 21), with the men falling 206-87 to IUPUI and the women dropping their dual meet with the Jaguars 203-88.

The Leathernecks got off to a slow start before seeing their first winner with Erica Hagen in the 50-breast (30.06). Hagen also won the 100-breast with a mark of 1:04.78.

Miranda Mathus took first in the 100-IM with a time of 1:01.99, with Hagen closing second at 1:02.05. Western Illinois' only male individual winner was Brennan Bladel, whose 56.38 time led the 100-IM. Kyle Siebert (59.05) finished second in that event.

The Purple and Gold's 200-free relay team of Chance McQuigg, Phillip Kudela, Seth Brady and Samir Almhiemid scored a win with a time of 1:28.50. Two other relay teams finished second with Taylor Winkel, Hagen, Mathus and Casey Roberts doing so in the 200-medley relay (1:50.39), and Bladel, McQuigg, Almhiemid and Kudella doing so in the same event on the men's side (1:37.30).

Individually on the women's side, Hannah Fisher also placed second in the 1000-free (11:13.54) and Mathus did the same in the 200-free (1:57.17). Marissa Purdum earned second in the 100-free (55.33).

On the men's side, McQuigg came in second in both the 50-breast (27.74) and 100-breast (59.89). Almhiemid also touched second in the 50-free (22.07).

Western Illinois next competes on Saturday (Oct. 28) at Eastern Illinois in a dual meet with the Panthers and Butler Bulldogs. The meet begins at 1 p.m.
