Hagen Wins Three Individual Events But Leathernecks Fall At WashU

Western women drop dual meet 192-101, while men falter 175-105

FULL MEET RESULTS

MACOMB, Ill. –
Erica Hagen won three individual events Saturday (Jan. 28), but the Western Illinois women stumbled 192-101, with the men falling 175-105 in a dual meet to Washington University in St. Louis.

Hagen first dominated the 100-breast, winning the event by nearly three seconds in 1:06.71. The sophomore then took the 200-breast in 2:28.87 before annihilating her competition by more than seven seconds in the 200-IM (2:15.76). Hagen also teamed with Madison Chao, Miranda Mathus and Casey Roberts to give Western a win in the 200-medley relay (1:51.39).

"They were a very tough opponent with a good amount of depth," said head coach Greg Naumann. "We struggled early in the meet trying to get up and go, but we started to get back into our groove later in the meet. We did pick up some solid wins from our usual culprits."

Roberts finished second in both the 200-free (1:58.79) and the 100-free (54.19). Mathus was narrowly edged to register a second-place touch in the 100-fly (1:00.48). Marissa Purdum was barely out-touched in the 50-free to come in second (25.14), with Hannah Fisher also earned second in the 1000-free (11:12.18).

On the men's side, Chris Neaveill blazed to a 47.57 time in the 100-free to win by less than a half-second. The Leathernecks also saw Samir Almhiemid take the 100-fly in 52.52, with Chance McQuigg slanting to win the 200-IM (2:01.20). McQuigg also placed second in the 100-breast (59.03).

The Leathernecks' relay squads were strong during the meet, with the men's 200-medley team of Brennan Bladel, McQuigg, Neaveill and Almhiemid winning by a nose in 1:36.08. Almhiemid, Neaveill and McQuigg raced with Seth Brady to take the 400-free relay (3:12.68), while Mathus, Purdum, Allison DeWane and Roberts won the same event on the women's side in 3:41.63.

Quetzal Gallagher won a pair of diving events, taking both the 3-meter (291.30) and the 1-meter (236.80).

"We didn't have as much fire in our swims like we did last week, but that's relatively normal," Naumann said. "We always perform well at home, and then struggle a bit coming off of the bus ride. Either way, I still like what I'm seeing out of the team in our meets and practice. We are looking good going into The Summit League Championships in mid-February."

Western Illinois' final regular season meet comes against the Iowa Hawkeyes on Friday (Feb. 3) at 6 p.m. in Iowa City.
