MACOMB, Ill.- Western Illinois takes on South Dakota Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m. in Summit League action. The Leathernecks look for their second win against the Coyotes in program history.
LAST TIME OUT:
In a down-to-the-wire game, the Western Illinois women's basketball team fell 76-72 to IUPUI Wednesday (Jan. 25) at home. With time winding down before halftime, Morgan Blumer made the shot of the game. The junior guard from Milton, Wis. rebounded a long IUPUI shot, and heaved the ball with one hand from the opposite free-throw line. The ball swished through the net as time expired. Blumer's play gained the national attention of ESPN, and it was featured on its premiere show, "SportsCenter."
Olivia Braun led the way with a career-high 18 points, followed by Taylor Higginbotham's 15 points and six assists. Emily Clemens had 14 points and five assists, and Morgan Blumer was the other Leatherneck in double-figures, with 14 points and five boards.
AROUND THE SUMMIT LEAGUE:
This season through 21 contests, Western Illinois leads The Summit League in scoring offense (80.0 points per game), steals (251/fifth nationally), steals per game (12.0/14th nationally), assists (383/ninth nationally), assists per game (18.2/14th nationally) and blocks per game (4.6).
From a shooting standpoint, Western Illinois tops the league in 3-pointers made (190/seventh nationally) and 3-pointers made per game (9.0/ninth nationally).
Emily Clemens ranks first in the league in assists, assists per game, steals and minutes. Her 18.4 points per game put her second in the league. Behind Clemens, Mallory Boyle and Morgan Blumer rank second and third in The Summit League with 2.2 and 1.9 steals per game. Olivia Braun leads the league in blocks per game with 2.8. She is 12th nationally with 59 total blocks thus far.
SCOUTING THE COYOTES:
South Dakota is currently 18-3 overall with a 7-1 mark in Summit League play. Allison Arens leads the league in scoring with 19.6 points per game. Jaycee Bradley and Ciara Duffy also average double-digit scoring, with 14.3 and 11.2 points per contest. As a team, the Coyotes are second in The Summit League for scoring offense, with 75.2 points per game.
They are led by head coach Dawn Plitzuweit, who is in her first year at the helm of the program. She is 206-96 in her head coaching career.
SERIES HISTORY VS. SOUTH DAKOTA:
The Leathernecks trail the all-time series 10-1 against South Dakota. Western Illinois won the fifth meeting, 81-71 on the road Jan. 23, 2014.
