Western Takes Down Three Brophy Hall Pool Records Against South Dakota

Leathernecks fall in preparation for Senior Day

FULL MEET RESULTS

MACOMB, Ill. –
Three Brophy Hall pool records fell on Friday (Jan. 20), but both the Western Illinois men and women lost to South Dakota 136-101 and 167-72, respectively.

Senior Chris Neaveill took down the first pool record in the 100-fly, touching the line in 50.10 for first place. Later in the meet, the other two Brophy Hall records fell in back-to-back events. Erica Hagen slanted to the wall in 1:05.49 to win the 100-breast before Chance McQuigg did the same in 56.49 to take the same event on the men's side.

"We are swimming fast right now, and getting even faster no matter what kind of training that I am putting the team through," said head coach Greg Naumann.

The Leathernecks got off to a fast start, with Madison Chao, Hagen, Miranda Mathus and Casey Roberts taking the 400-medley relay in 3:59.33. The men's squadron of Brennan Bladel, McQuigg, Neaveill and Samir Almhiemid did the same, winning in 3:28.12. Western's men's 400-free relay team of Neaveill, Bladel, Josh Hill and McQuigg also took first (3:12.32), with the women's team of Roberts, Marissa Purdum, Hagen and Mathus earning second in 3:42.41.

Freshman Connor Owens took home Western's first individual victory, earning a lengthy victory in the 1000-free with a time of 10:09.53. Almhiemid (22.28) then sprinted for the win in the 50-free before taking the 100-back (52.83).

Mathus notched the women's only individual victory, etching first in the 100-free (54.47). Roberts swiped second in the 200-free (1:59.35), while Purdum did the same in the 50-free (25.35).

Amanda Schaefer (5:33.49) and Hannah Fisher (5:36.35) registered second and third, respectively, in the 500-free. Western Illinois also saw Bladel take second in the men's 500-free (4:56.56).

"We had a really good meet despite not coming out of it with the win," Naumann said. "Our lack of depth is definitely hurting us right now in dual meets. With how our conference championship meet is set up, it should be a really good meet for placing third-fifth."

Quetzal Gallagher placed second in both the men's 1-meter (245.19) and 3-meter (248.63) dives. Melanie Pearson placed third in the women's 1-meter with a score of 210.99.

Western Illinois will meet South Dakota again for Senior Day's 10 a.m. meet on Saturday (Jan. 21). Prior to the competition, the Leathernecks will honor five seniors.

"The meet shows great promise as we look towards tomorrow morning, and then to Washington University (St. Louis), University of Iowa and then the Summit League Championships," said Naumann. "They have put it some very difficult practices over the past three weeks, and now we are looking to start resting them as we get closer to conference."
