Softball Takes Two from IPFW

Kacyee Hart, Karissa Kouchis and Tierney Bottino will be honored tomorrow for Senior Day

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois softball team picked up a pair of wins over Fort Wayne on Friday (May 6) at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium in Macomb. The Leathernecks topped the Mastodons by a score of 13-4 in five innings in game one before picking up game two by a score of 9-7. Western has now won four straight Summit League games and move to 7-8 in the league (15-31 overall).

GAME ONE: Western Illinois 13, Fort Wayne 4 (Five Innings)

The Leathernecks got off to a shaky start in game one when Fort Wayne took an early 1-0 lead following two hits and two Western errors in the top of the first.

Western would not be down for long as they would go on to score eight runs off of eight hits in the bottom of the first. The rally got started with a leadoff double from Karissa Kouchis. Tierney Bottino would then send Kouchis home with a single. Kelsey Marlow and Aly Compton then loaded the bases for Rachel Beatty who walked in a run to give the Leathernecks a 2-1 lead. A bases-clearing double from Hailey Duwa helped the Leathernecks pull ahead 5-0.

After Nina Maggio walked and eventually worked her way to third following a fielder's choice from Taylor Messer and a ground out from Holly Hoelting, she was brought home when Kouchis hit her second double of the inning. Bottino then sent Kouchis home with her second RBI-single of the inning. With one inning in the books, the Leathernecks had a comfortable 8-1 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Western tacked one more run onto their lead when Maggio singled and Hoelting hit a sacrifice fly to drive her in.

In the bottom of the fourth, Bottino was hit by a pitch and Marlow walked to start the inning off. The duo advanced to scoring position following a sacrifice bunt from Compton. In the next at bat, Beatty launched her fifth home run of the season over the right field fence to give the Leathernecks a 12-1 lead. The rally didn't stop there as Duwa drew a walk to bring on Amanda Manton to pinch run. Erin Rossetto then stepped up to hit a pinch-hit RBI single to score Manton. At the end of four innings of play, Western lead 13-1.

IPFW would threaten Western's lead in the top of the fifth when they drew a leadoff walk and then hit back-to-back home runs to lessen the Leatherneck lead. Payton Abbott would come in for relief of Emily Ira to get the final batter out swinging as the Leathernecks went on to win 13-4.

Western collected 11 hits in the victory with Kouchis, Bottino, Marlow, Beatty and Maggio each recording two. Beatty led the way with a career-high four RBIs while Duwa drove in three.

Ira got the nod in the circle and produced 4.2 innings of work. The freshman, now 6-12 in the circle, allowed seven hits, three earned runs and struck out three batters.

GAME TWO: Western Illinois 9, Fort Wayne 7

The Mastodons hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. Kacyee Hart would then work her way out of trouble as she struck out two of the next three batters.

The Leathernecks answered back as they scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kouchis led off with a single followed by a double from Bottino. Beatty would get the two home safely following a two-run single to center field. Duwa then hit her second home run of the season over the center field fence to give the Leathernecks their first lead of the game, 4-3.

IPFW would not back down as Demetra Burns hit a leadoff home run to center field to tie the game up at 4-4. The Mastodons pulled ahead in the top of the third 5-4 following a leadoff single that led to a double-steal.

Western answered back when Marlow smacked a leadoff triple to right center. Beatty then hit her second home run of the day, and her fourth in five games, to give the Leathernecks their lead back, 6-5.

In the bottom of the fourth, Kouchis recorded her second single of the day and was brought home when Bottino singled down the left field line.

The top of the fifth brought some trouble for Western Illinois when Burns hit a two-out, two-run single to tie the game up at 7-7.

The tie wouldn't last long. In the bottom of the sixth Bottino collected her third base hit of the game. Marlow then hit into a fielder's choice that forced Bottino out at second. Beatty then recorded her fifth RBI of the day with a double that brought Marlow home to give the Leathernecks their lead back for good. Beatty was then driven home following a one-run double from Duwa.

Abbott recorded two strikeouts to end the top of the seventh inning as Western went on to win game two 9-7.

The Leathernecks compiled 15 hits in game two as Bottino and Beatty each led the team with three. Beatty drove in five runs which ties for ninth all-time in program history for RBIs in a single game. Duwa also contributed with three RBIs on the day.

Hart pitched five innings with seven hits and seven earned runs while recording five strikeouts. Abbott picked up her fourth win of the season as she gave up no hits, no earned runs and struck out three batters.

The Purple and Gold will go for the sweep tomorrow (May 7) at noon. Prior to the game, seniors Bottino, Hart and Kouchis will be honored as they take to Mary Ellen Mckee Stadium one final time as a part of Senior Day.
