FARGO, N.D. – The Western Illinois softball team fell to IUPUI in the opening round of The Summit League Championships by a score of 3-2 on Wednesday (May 11).

IUPUI scored first in the top of the third following a sacrifice fly from Taylor Chitwood. An RBI double from Chitwood in the top of the fifth inning extended the Jaguars' lead to 2-0. IUPUI would add on one more run in the top of the sixth when Delilah Wright hit an RBI single.

Western got on the board in the sixth inning with Kelsey Marlow hit her second-career home run to left center field to cut the deficit to two runs, 3-1. Kacyee Hart then drove Manton home when she hit a single down the right field line to put the Leathernecks within one. The rally would fall short on a double play when Aly Compton flew out to right field and Maggio was called out at home.

Tierney Bottino then reached on a fielder's choice that forced Hoelting out at second base. Marlow then drew her second walk of the game, but her and Bottino were left stranded as the Leathernecks fell by a score of 3-2.
