Leathernecks End Season with Loss

Nathan Pollock and Chris Tschida record two hits apiece.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Western Illinois ended its 2016 baseball season with a 6-3 loss at IPFW on Saturday afternoon (May 21). Six seniors wore the Purple & Gold for the final time: Mark Garton, Erik Maki, Nathan Pollock, Nick Milligan, Joe Mortillaro and Jordan Pannell.

Fort Wayne jumped on the board in the third inning, using two singles and a 2-run home run to take a 3-0 lead. The Mastodons threatened again in the fourth. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with no one out. Jackson Boyce lined a RBI single. Mortillaro picked up a pair of strikeouts and an infield popup to limit the damage.

Western got on the scoreboard in the fifth to end a streak of 17 scoreless innings. Pollock singled to start the frame. A fielder's choice and error put a pair on with one out. Pinch-hitter Justin Fitzpatrick walked to load the bases. Chris Tschida lined a single to score Deion Thompson and Steve McShane to make it 4-2.

Down 5-2 in the sixth, pinch-hitter Aden Campbell went to second on a ball lost in the sun by the second baseman Boyce. He scored on Pollock's RBI double. The Mastodons added a sacrifice fly in the eighth for the final margin.

Pollock, with 56 career games played coming into the weekend, had three career multi-hit games. He matched that total this weekend with his third straight multi-hit game. Tschida added two hits.

All three of Western's senior pitchers took the mound. Mortillaro (2-6) was charged for four runs on seven hits in four innings. He walked one and struck out five. Milligan gave up an unearned run and struck out two in an inning, and Pannell did not allow an earned run on three hits in three innings. Western's pitchers struck out nine and walked one.

Brandon Phelps (2-1) got the win in relief, allowing an unearned run in 1.1 innings. Starter Brandon Pease was charged for two runs on three hits in 4.2 innings.

The Leathernecks recorded the 10th-most strikeouts by their pitching staff in program history (322) while the 15 triples tied for ninth on the season 'Top 10'.
