Baseball Falls in Game Two at SIU

Mark Garton accounted for two hits

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Western Illinois fell behind early and could not stage a rally in game two of the series at Southern Illinois, dropping a 9-0 decision on Saturday afternoon.

The Leathernecks got a two-out triple from Colton Pogue in the first inning, but could not bring him home. SIU (3-3 overall) put the first two runners on in its half on a single and double. A sacrifice fly brought home the first run then Logan Blackfan hit a 2-run homer.

Adam McGinnis hit a leadoff single in the second but was stranded. SIU got another run in the second on a RBI groundout. In the fifth, Nathan Pollock singled to start then Steve McShane reached on an error to put runners at first and second. The Leathernecks, however, hit into a double play and eventually stranded the runner at third.

Southern got an unearned run during the fifth and broke the game open in the sixth scoring four runs. Mark Garton doubled with one out in the ninth but a foul out and groundout ended the game.

Jordan Pannell fanned four in 2.1 scoreless innings and Robert Nunn recorded a strikeout in his one-third of an inning worked.
