Leathernecks Drop Series Finale

Western’s offense limited in finale at SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. – For the second straight day, Western Illinois was limited on offense at Southern Illinois dropping a 9-0 decision in the series finale.

The Leathernecks were held to three hits on Sunday (Feb. 28) and ended the weekend with one run on 10 hits. SIU jumped out to an early lead two batters in following a bunt single, stolen base and RBI single. Southern loaded the bases with no one out but starter J.T. Baksha got out of the jam with three consecutive strikeouts.

The Salukis picked up an unearned run in the second then plated two more runs in the third frame. They broke the game open following a five-run fourth inning, started by a leadoff home run.

Relief pitchers Jimmy Perkins (2.0 IP) and Ricky Digrugilliers (1.0 IP) blanked Southern down the stretch as each struck out two batters.

Justin Fitzpatrick took advantage of a dropped foul ball in the third inning and later singled in his at-bat. Mark Garton lined a two-out double in the fourth inning, his second double of the year. Garton was hit by a pitch in the seventh but was erased on a double play. Chris Tschida singled with one down in the ninth then Dave Dobrinich walked, but a game-ending double play ended Western's scoring threat.

Baksha (0-2) was charged with a run on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Ian Koch allowed a run on two hits in 2.0 innings, striking out two. The five WIU pitchers combined to strikeout 12 Salukis.

Western returns to action next weekend, starting a four-game series at Northern Kentucky with a doubleheader on Saturday (March 5).
