Hagen, Neaveill Shine Despite Western Losses

Pair each earns two first-place swims, but Leathernecks swept at Truman State

FULL MEET RESULTS

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. –
Both Erica Hagen and Chris Neaveill won two individual events, but the Western Illinois women fell 160-97 and the Leatherneck men lost 167-85 in a dual meet Saturday (Dec. 3) at Truman State.

"Today was definitely a tough meet against a very fast team," said head coach Greg Naumann. "The team as a whole are all very tired and sore coming off of this weeks training, and the break at Thanksgiving. We did have some great swims from Erica, Miranda (Mathus), Chris, and our relays."

Coming off a meet in which she set a school record, Hagen hit the wall in 1:06.90 to win the 100-breast. The sophomore later took the 200-breast in 2:30:58 before earning second in the 200-IM (2:14.01).

Neaveill sprinted to first in the 50-free (21.34) before registering a 49.48 mark in the 100-fly, taking that event as well.

Western Illinois recorded just one more first-place touch in the meet, with Miranda Mathus racing to the top of the 100-fly in 59.78. The freshman later came in second in the 200-free with a mark of 1:57.43.

"Given how the team felt this week, and what we did training wise, this wasn't a big shock," Naumann said. "We continue to work on how to take the little things from practice, and implement them into our racing at meets."

Western's relay squads each earned a second-place finish. The women's squadron of Madison Chao, Hagen, Mathus and Casey Roberts flew to a 1:51.38 mark in the 200-medley relay. Mathus, Dana Kaftan, Marissa Purdum and Roberts etched second in the 200-free relay with a time of 1:41.31.

The men's squad of Neaveill, Chance McQuigg, Samir Almhiemid and Seth Brady hit second in the 200-medley in 1:35.02, with the quartet just getting out-touched for second in the 200-free relay (1:25.66).

The Leathernecks also received second-place finishes from Hannah Fisher (1000-free, 11:20.88), McQuigg (100-breast, 59.13) and Kyle Siebert (2:15.04).

Western Illinois won't race in a meet until they host South Dakota and Olivet Nazarene at 6 p.m. on January 20, with a dual meet against the Coyotes at noon marking Senior Day the next day.

"We've got a good amount of time off over the winter break, and we are looking forward to our meet with South Dakota," said Naumann. "This is always a close meet with a lot of excitement.
