Walter Camp Foundation Honors Brett Taylor

Western Illinois’s Taylor selected to the prestigious postseason team

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Western Illinois junior linebacker Brett Taylor (Macomb/Macomb) received another All-America honor on Monday (Dec. 19). The Walter Camp Foundation, one of the oldest and most prestigious All-America teams, announced the 26-member squad.

The Walter Camp Foundation selects just one All-America team, and Taylor was one of three linebackers selected. The junior was one of six representatives from the Missouri Valley Football Conference, the most honorees nationally by any conference. The team was selected by the head coaches and sports information directors of the Football Championship Subdivision schools and certified by the accounting and auditing firm, Marcum LLP.

Taylor also joins elite company in program history, becoming just the 14th Leatherneck student-athlete all-time to earn the Walter Camp award.

"Being named to the Walter Camp Foundation All-America team is such a prestigious honor for Brett and Western Illinois University. It's one of the most well-known All-America teams, and a great honor since there is just one team. We are very happy and proud of Brett receiving this well-deserved award," said head coach Charlie Fisher.

He's the first Leatherneck named to the Walter Camp team since linebacker Kyle Glazier in 2010. It's the third All-America honor this year for the Macomb native. Taylor was the only non-senior among the three linebackers selected to the Walter Camp team, and one of five juniors on the defensive side.

Following his nation-leading 94 solo tackles and 134 total tackles during the 2016 season, Taylor will enter his senior year ranked among the career 'Top 10' in both categories. He holds down the ninth spot twice among the season 'Top 10' in solo tackles (94 in both 2015 and '16), and with 198 in his career he ranks sixth all-time. Taylor became the 12th Leatherneck all-time to record 300 career tackles, currently with 307 and in 11th place.

Taylor's 8.55 solo tackles per game ties him for the 10th-best season average in NCAA FCS history.

ABOUT WALTER CAMP AND THE WALTER CAMP FOUNDATION: Walter Camp, "The Father of American football," first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation – a New Haven-based all-volunteer group – was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team. Visit www.waltercamp.org for more information.
