COACH WRIGHT POSTGAME RADIO INTERVIEW

VERMILLION, S.D. –
Western Illinois led by 10 points early in the second half, but a large Coyote run helped South Dakota defeat Western Illinois, 76-67, inside the DakotaDome Wednesday evening (Jan. 20).

USD improved to 2-4 in Summit League action and 10-10 overall after the win, while WIU dropped to 0-6 in league play and 7-10 overall on the year.

The Leathernecks led for nearly the entire first half and used a buzzer-beating layup by senior guard J.C. Fuller to take a five-point lead into the locker room after 20 minutes of play.

After South Dakota cut its deficit to three points with the first basket of the second half, Western used a 10-3 run to build its lead up to 10 points three minutes into the period.

The Coyotes answered with a 29-5 run over 8:55 minutes to turn their 10-point deficit into a 14-point lead, 66-52, with just under nine minutes to play in the game.

Western was able to cut USD's lead to six points at the 6:27 mark, and seven points with 2:13 to play in the game, before eventually dropping their eighth consecutive contest.

Similar to its last game, Western took care of the ball in the first half before having a turnover-filled second. WIU had only five during the first 20 minutes of play, and 11 during the last 20 minutes. USD scored 22 points off of those turnovers, 15 of which came in the second half.

Fuller led Western with 16 points. He also tallied four rebounds and was one of three players to finish with three assists.

Junior guard Garret Covington also had three helpers to go with his 13 points and five rebounds. Fellow junior Jabari Sandifer also dished out three assists in the defeat.

Tate Stengaard, a senior forward, was WIU's third player to score in double figures with 10 points. He also led the Leathernecks with six rebounds.

Senior forward Jalen Chapman started the first game of this season and eighth of his career, finishing with nine points, five rebounds, and two assists. Junior Mike Miklusak added eight points off of the bench.

South Dakota was led by Casey Kasperbauer who finished with 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field and connecting on 6-of-8 attempts from long range. Tre Burnette contributed a double-double effort to the Coyotes, scoring 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.

Western plays host to North Dakota State Saturday afternoon (Jan. 23) in Macomb at 2 p.m. Fans are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to the game for donation as a part of The Summit League's annual Food Fight. Fans can exchange five items of food for a $5 ticket.
