Women's Soccer Falls to Austin Peay

Brianna Hughes scored her first career goal and Victoria Kappel had six saves in the defeat

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team's five-match road swing continued on Friday, September 11, as they took on Austin Peay State in Clarksville, Tennessee. A first half goal by Brianna Hughes was not enough as the Leathernecks fell to the Governors by a score of 7-1. With the loss, Western moves to 1-5-0 on the season while the Governors improve to 2-4-0.

"People will read this with one eyebrow raised, but I didn't think we were bad tonight. The score line flatters them for sure, but they were not six goals better than we were," said head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites.

Austin Peay's offensive attack started fast as they took five shots within the first 10 minutes of the match. Western keeper Victoria Kappel would be called upon to make her first save in the 14th minute following APSU's first shot on target. The senior would end the evening with six saves.

Western's offensive attack started heating up in the 18th minute when freshman Kayla Kirkwood took a shot on goal, forcing APSU's keeper Lindsey Todd to make her first save of the night. Less than two minutes later, Madeline Edwards took a shot on frame, but Todd was there to make the stop.

Austin Peay got on board first in the 23rd minute when McKenzie Dixon found a deflected ball in the box and was able to get it past Kappel to take a 1-0 lead.

In the 28th minute, Brianna Hughes would score her first career goal off of an assist from Caitlin Rerucha to tie up the match 1-1.

APSU responded in the 33rd minute when Dixon found the back of the net following a penalty kick for her second goal of the game to give the Governors their lead back.

Kappel was able to stop the Governors lead from growing any larger when she made her third save of the half in the 43rd minute. The two teams would head into halftime with APSU up 2-1.

Following intermission, the Governors would score goals in the 55th and 57th minutes to extend their lead by a score of 4-1.

"Every shot they took in the second half resulted in a goal. We hit the cross bar, we took loads of shots, but sometimes futbol is a cruel game and the ball isn't bouncing our way right now," said Flogaites. "For stretches of the game we were very good and we had them pinned in for the first fifteen of the second half."

Jessop and Scaffidi would each take one shot apiece in the second half to try and even the score, but their attempts were unsuccessful. Hughes would also take her second shot of the night in the 68th minute, but this time the ball went straight to the keeper.

In the 79th minute, Dixon would score her third goal of the match off of a free kick from 20 yards out and the Governors would take a 5-1 lead.

Lexi Harris would check into goal for the Leathernecks for the second straight contest, but in the 84th minute, APSU took a shot that got past her left side for the Governor's sixth goal of the night.

With 20 seconds left in the match, the Governors would score one last goal to take the match by a score of 7-1.

"I'm not trying to spin it and make it positive, I genuinely don't think we were poor in the match. The opposition are scoring once in a lifetime goals against us right now and I have a sneaking suspicion that the tide is turning," added Flogaites. "We have no time or interest in feeling sorry for ourselves. This group will get it done, we will find a way, we are determined."

The Purple and Gold will look to bounce back on Sunday, September 13, when they take on SIU-Edwardsville in Edwardsville, Illinois at 1 p.m.
