Women's Soccer Falls to SIU-Edwardsville

Leathernecks narrowly drop match to Cougars, 1-0

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team continued the nonconference portion of its season on Sunday, September 13, against SIU-Edwardsville in Edwardsville, Illinois, where they fell to the Cougars by a score of 1-0. The Leathernecks drop to 1-6-0 on the season after the decision, while SIU-Edwardsville improves to 2-4-2.

"The match turned on one moment. It was a moment that never should have led to a goal, it's hard to believe it actually did and we are culpable for it," said head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites. "Aside from that moment, I rated our performance and thought our defense gave them virtually nothing, no clear looks. Mary Street put on the performance of her career and I remain happy with the players."

The lone goal came early in the match in the 13th minute when SIU-Edwardsville's Jorie Clawson fed the ball to Cassidy Sherman who hit a header into the back of the net.

Shortly after the SIUE goal in the 14th minute, Western would attempt to respond behind the foot of Caitlin Rerucha but her shot ultimately went wide. In the 16th minute, Madeline Edwards put a shot on frame, forcing the Cougars' keeper Jennifer Pelley to make her first stop of the afternoon.

Both sides would battle back and forth for the rest of the opening half but neither team could create any scoring opportunities. After 45 minutes of play, the teams would head to halftime with the Cougars leading 1-0.

In the 47th and 51st minute, the Cougars would take two shots on goals but Victoria Kappel was there to make stops on both SIUE scoring chances.

Both teams would take attempts throughout the second half, but the play remained a defensive and physical battle for the rest of the match.

Edwards would try to even the score once again for WIU in the 89th minute from a free kick 20 yards out, but SIUE's Pelley punched the ball out and the Cougars held on to take the 1-0 victory.

"The results we have had haven't been awesome and we have deserved better from some of the performances, today included," added Flogaites. "But the players have been good and we have been much more solid and much more difficult to break down than the results indicate. Players don't concede goals, teams do, and we win and lose as a team."

The Purple and Gold will be back in action next Sunday, September 20, against Missouri State in Springfield, Missouri at 1 p.m.
