MACOMB, Ill. –
The Western Illinois women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season in a thrilling double-overtime victory on Friday, August 28, against Eastern Illinois in Macomb. Skyler Jessop scored the game-winning shot off an assist from Madeline Edwards in the 105th minute. With the win, the Leathernecks move to 1-1-0 on the young season, while Eastern falls to 0-2-1.

"I thought we started the game well in the first couple of minutes, but then we acted as if the game was over which is obviously a big mistake at this level," said head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites, who secured his 150th career win following today's match. "I thought they were the better team for the first half of the second half, and I thought our desire went missing. However, we found our way back into the game by connecting and creating options. I thought our desire down the stretch was significantly better than theirs, and I think the hungrier team won."

The offense got off to a quick start from both sides, but it was the Leathernecks who struck first. Meagan Wilson scored the first goal of the match on a header from a corner kick from Tyra Markey in the third minute.

Eastern responded in the seventh minute when Molly Hawkins found the back of the net off an assist from Kathleen Mackinnon.

The in-state rivals each created a number of scoring chances during the rest of the first half, but neither team was able to capitalize and the score would stay even after 45 minutes of play.

It was the Panthers who would strike first following the intermission, as Hawkins found the back of the net in the 46th minute for her second goal of the day.

The Purple and Gold's offense applied the pressure in the second half as Skyler Jessop, Gina Scaffidi, Madeline Edwards, and Lindsey Kuitse would all take shots. In the 74th minute the pressure paid off, as freshman Ashley Kuhlmann fought through a flurry of defenders in the box to score her first career goal off of assists from Scaffidi and Michaela Cody.

Neither side could create any scoring opportunities throughout the rest of the second half, and the two teams would head to overtime tied 2-2.

During the first overtime period, Hawkins would attempt to score her third goal of the match for the Panthers, but she couldn't get the ball past Victoria Kappel who was there to make her second save of the evening. After 100 minutes of play, the score remained 2-2.

In the 105th minute, Jessop found herself in a one-on-one battle with Eastern's goalkeeper after an assist from Madeline Edwards. Jessop's shot found the bottom right corner of the net to lead the Leathernecks to victory.

"In matches like this it comes down to who wants it more," added Flogaites. "I didn't have to do much motivating. We have a team that wants to win and we were at home, we wanted to play better and represent the University in the right way."

The Purple and Gold will be back in action on Sunday, August 30, at home. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m. on the northwest game field behind Brophy Hall. Fans are encouraged to bring their own seating.
