Fighting Leathernecks drop match to Western Michigan, 2-0

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team fell to Western Michigan on Sunday, September 6, by a score of 2-0 in Macomb. Following the loss, the Leathernecks move to 1-3-0 on the season while the Broncos improve to 3-1-1.

"I thought we were the better team in the first half. After the first 10 or 15 minutes, I thought our passion really showed and we out competed in all of the intangibles as far as want and desire and we were first to all the 50/50s," said head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites. "We created some nice chances, and they (Western Michigan) were a quality team that we were easily just as good as in the first half."

Meagan Wilson took the Leatherneck's first shot on target in the 4th minute, but Western Michigan's keeper was there to make the save.

The visiting Broncos would strike first in the 11th minute off of a header from Irene Young. Following the goal, Western Michigan would continue to apply the pressure, but were unable to get the ball past Victoria Kappel who made back-to-back saves in the 12th minute.

Daniela Salinas took a header in the 26th minute, forcing the Broncos' keeper to make her second save of the half. The two teams would battle for the remainder of the half with neither side able to get the ball near the net. At the end of 45 minutes of play, the Broncos held a narrow 1-0 lead over the Leathernecks.

Following the intermission, the Leathernecks first chance to score came in the 59th minute behind the foot of Skyler Jessop, but WMU's keeper made the stop.

"I thought we almost caught them a couple of times. The ball got played to Michaela Cody then to Kayla Kirkwood who turned it to Skyler, and that was the best counter attack I have seen in four years," said Flogaites. "That happened in about seven seconds and we were just missing that little piece to get it behind (the keeper)."

It was a physical battle for much of the second half, with neither side able to creating many scoring opportunities.

In the 82nd minute, Western Michigan's Irene Young took a corner kick that worked its way to Emma Kahn who found the back of the net to score the second goal of the game and the Broncos would go on to take the match by a score of 2-0.

The Leathernecks will now hit the road for four straight away matches beginning with Northern Iowa on Tuesday, September 8, at 7 p.m.
