MACOMB, Ill. -Â Western Illinois baseball and No. 15 Iowa are set for a rematch this Tuesday (May 5) in Iowa City, Iowa after the Leathernecks beat the Hawkeyes, 16-5, in seven innings on April 1 in Macomb.

LAST TIME OUT: Last weekend the Leathernecks traveled to Brookings, South Dakota and dropped two of three games to South Dakota State... Western took game one, 9-4, in 12 innings... A six-run 12th inning helped propel the Purple and Gold to victory... JJ Reimer led at the plate with a 5-for-6 performance, including a solo home run... Adam McGinnis also added three hits as both teams combined for 33... The bats stayed hot in game two with a total of 29 hits and 28 runs... However, SDSU would hold the advantage, outscoring WIU 19-9 in eight innings... Mark Garton and Kendall King both homered in the loss... Colton Pogue also went 3-for-4 at the plate... The Jackrabbits took game three in convincing fashion as well, defeating Western 12-2... Pogue notched another 3-for-4 performance while Roman Visintine nearly legged out an inside-the-park home run...Visintine was credited a triple and accounted for both of the Leatherneck's runs with an RBI and a run scored.
SCOUTING THE HAWKEYES: Since losing to Western Illinois on April first in Macomb, the Hawkeyes have gone 15-6, winning every weekend series they've played... A sweep of nationally ranked Nebraska and a series win over Michigan leave Iowa with just three losses in Big Ten Conference play... Head coach Rick Heller now has the Hawkeyes ranked as high as 15th by Collegiate Baseball... The second-year head coach is well on his way to leading Iowa to its second straight Big Ten Tournament berth... Eric Toole and Jake Mangler lead the Hawkeye offense, both batting over .300... Toole leads the team with 33 runs and Mangler sits first with 31 RBIs... On the mound Blake Hickman is 7-1 in 12 starts and boasts a 3.06 ERA... From the bullpen Nick Hibbing leads the team with five saves.
SERIES HISTORY: Despite trailing in the all-time series to Iowa, 53-27-1, Western defeated the Hawkeyes in convincing fashion earlier this season... Iowa came in ranked 24th and the Leathernecks ended the game after seven innings with a 16-5 score... Colton Pogue hit his first career home run, a grand slam, to end the game... The Purple and Gold also beat Iowa in 2014 in Iowa City... WIU took an early lead before the Hawkeyes battled back and extended the game to extra innings... Western held on to win the game, 8-6, in 10 innings.Â
UP NEXT: Tuesday marks WIU's final nonconference game... The Leathernecks will stay at home to host Omaha this weekend (May 8-10) and then travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma to finish the season against Oral Roberts... Western is currently tied for the fourth, and final, spot in The Summit League Tournament with North Dakota State.
