Leathernecks Drop Finale to South Dakota State

Western tallied 10 hits in the loss.

BROOKINGS, S.D. - Western Illinois baseball notched double-digit hits in its fourth straight game but fell, 12-2, to South Dakota State in eight innings on Sunday (May 3).

Roman Visintine hit his first career triple while scoring one run and driving in a second. Colton Pogue stayed hot as well, going 3-for-4 at the plate for the second game in a row. Western falls to 15-28 overall and 8-16 in The Summit League. SDSU improves to 28-18 and 15-9.

"This is the first time in 18 years of coaching that three starters went down in a weekend. I give our players credit for keeping their energy up through adversity," said head coach Ryan Brownlee after the loss. "Our guys battled through it, and this will be an opportunity for other guys. Our offensive approach was good again. We have had very good approaches up and down the lineup for the last 10 games. We will have to adjust pitching roles on the fly here. We will see what type of mental toughness we have here as a program down the stretch."

In a weekend filled with offense, South Dakota State continued the theme with three runs in the bottom of the first. Over the next five innings, the Jackrabbits scored six more unanswered runs.

The Leathernecks threatened with runners in scoring position in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings with no result. However, in the seventh Western would get on the board.

Adam McGinnis opened the inning with a single up the middle. Visintine followed up with a line drive that rolled all the way to the fence and nearly legged out an inside-the-park home run. He would settle for a triple and an RBI, then come in to score on a sacrifice fly from King.

SDSU repsonded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, and another run in the eighth would end the game.

Nick Milligan (1-1) was given the loss in his first career start. At the plate Visintine ended the day 2-for-3, accounting for both of Western's runs. The Purple and Gold combined for 10 hits, including a pair of doubles from Pogue, and Brent Turner. On the weekend, both teams combined for a total of 85 hits and 55 runs in 28 innings of baseball.

The Leathernecks will return to action on Tuesday (May 5) in a rematch with nationally ranked Iowa in Iowa City. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
