Leathernecks Fall Short Against No. 15 Iowa

Western battled the Hawkeyes to a 7-5 loss on Tuesday (May 5) in Iowa City.

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Western Illinois baseball went to Iowa City looking for a season sweep over nationally ranked Iowa, but came up short, losing 7-5 on Tuesday (May 5) at Duane Banks Field.

Jake Moore hit his fifth home run of season, a powerful two-run shot with the wind blowing in, and Brent Turner made an incredible diving catch in center field to save a leadoff double. However, Western would fall to 15-29 on the year while Iowa improved to 34-12.

Each team only surrendered one hit through the first four innings, but with two outs in the top of the fifth Western would strike. Turner singled to center and Colton Pogue followed up with a double. Moore was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and JJ Reimer would single to drive in Turner and Pogue to give the Leathernecks a 2-0 lead.

The Hawkeyes responded with a run in the fifth and five more in the sixth to take a 6-2 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Kendall King opened the inning with a single to to left center and a stolen base. A base hit from Turner would bring King in to score. Then, Moore stepped to the plate and took the ball opposite field for a two-run home run to make it a one-run game. The Purple and Gold would load the bases, but a ground-ball double play would end the Leatherneck rally.

An insurance run for Iowa in the eighth would mark the final tally.

Moore would finish the game 3-for-4 at the plate with a run and two RBIs. Turner also turned in a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and an RBI. Pogue added a double to the nine-hit effort as the Leathernecks finished with three stolen bases as well.

J.T. Baksha (2-5) would be given the loss as a total of seven WIU pitchers produced seven strikeouts over eight innings of work.

Western returns to Alfred D. Boyer on Friday (May 8) to close out its home schedule against Summit League foe Omaha. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 p.m. with games two and three set for noon on Saturday and Sunday (May 9-10).
