Track and Field Wraps Up at Kip Janvrin Open

Jasmine Brown and Sheila Grant-Shaffer each took first in the long jump and hammer throw.

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Western Illinois track and field competed in rain and waited out a lightning delay to take home 11 'Top 10' finishes from the Kip Janvrin Open, hosted by Simpson College, on Friday (April 24).

"The weather put a damper on most things," said head coach Mike Stevenson following the meet. "We had a lightning delay and some serious rain. The highlight of the day was certainly Jasmine Brown's big jump in the long jump. Sheila Grant-Shaffer had a great throw in the hammer on Thursday as well."

In addition to Brown's and Grant-Shaffer's first-place performances, Sierra Woods added a pair of 'Top 10' finishes in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. The Leathernecks dominated the women's 400 meter dash with Aaliyah White, Alyssa Johnson, Katelyn Rhea, and Myelle Vann all placing in the 'Top 10'. Mary-Bianca Fuller finished 10th in the discus and Jessica Przyby came in 10th in the hammer throw.

For the men, De'Maine Bailey crossed 'Top 10' in the 100 meter dash, while Danny Daniels came in fourth in the javelin.

Western also competed at the Drake Relays in Des Moines. The men's 4x100 and 4x200 meter relays failed to advance to the finals. However, Jasmine Brown will compete in the triple jump on Saturday (April 25), along with the women's sprint-medley relay representing a chance for WIU to score in Des Moines.
