Men's Tennis Season Concludes at Summit League Championships

Leathernecks fall to Fort Wayne to finish of spring season

FORT WAYNE, IND. - The Western Illinois men's tennis team finished its spring season on Friday, April 24, as the team competed in the opening round of The Summit League Championships. Western battled with tournament hosts Fort Wayne, ultimately dropping a 0-4 decision.

Doubles action kicked off with the Mastodons picking up victories at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Jacob Sanders and Anthony Timberlake took to the No. 3 spot and dropped a 1-8 decision to Connor Andrews and Derek Romer. Chris Bunch and Surya Sawhney took to the No. 2 spot and fell by a final score of 2-8. Christoph Haertel and Nikola Pavlovic were trailing 1-7 at the top doubles position when the match was suspended.

In singles action, Fort Wayne collected wins at the No. 4, 5, and 6 positions en route to the victory. Timberlake fell, 0-6, 0-6, at No. 6 to put Fort Wayne up 2-0. Sanders fell by a 2-6, 1-6 final at No. 5 to give the Mastodons their third point, and the match was decided when Sawhney fell, 2-6, 1-6, at the No. 4 position. All other matches were suspended in action after Fort Wayne clinched the match. Haertel claimed the first set of his No. 1 match, 6-1, and was trailing 0-4 in the second set when play was stopped. Bunch was leading in the first set of his No. 2 match, 5-2, before ultimately dropping the set, 5-7. Pavlovic battled in the first set at No. 3, falling 4-6. He was down 0-1 in the second set at the conclusion of play.

Western Illinois will now focus its attention on finalizing the roster in preparation of the 2015-16 season.
