Men's Tennis Falls at Northwestern

Nationally ranked Wildcats defeat Leathernecks on Sunday (March 8) evening

EVANSTON, ILL. - The Western Illinois men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to in-state foe Northwestern on Sunday, March 6, in Evanston. The Leathernecks fall to 0-10 (0-2 Summit League) on the season while Northwestern, ranked No. 21 in the ITA rankings, improve to 11-5 on the season (2-1 Big Ten).

"Northwestern was a challenging matchup for us today," said head coach Mashiska Washington. We fought hard and gave it our best. Our team had a good experience from the match."

Northwestern quickly earned the doubles point behind a 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles and a forfeit by Western Illinois at No. 3 doubles. The No. 2 doubles match was suspended at 5-0 in favor of the Wildcats due to the doubles point being secured.

In singles action, Chris Bunch fell 6-1, 6-0 at the top spot against Sam Shropshire. Nikola Pavlovic, Surya Sawhney, Jacob Sanders, and Ross Smith all dropped 6-0, 6-0 decisions at the No. 2 through No. 5 spots, respectively. The No. 6 singles match was forfeited by WIU due to only having five players dressed.

The Leathernecks return to the courts on Monday, March 16, as the team hits the road for its spring break road trip. Up first is a dual against the Raiders of Wright State. First serve is set for 2 p.m. in Dayton, Ohio.
