MACOMB, Ill. -
The Western Illinois women's tennis team collected a pair of victories Sunday (March 22) afternoon, as the Leathernecks defeated Quincy and Monmouth in nonconference action. The Purple and Gold opened action with a close 4-3 win over Quincy before rounding out the action with a 6-1 decision over Monmouth. With the two wins, Western moves to 3-17 (0-4) on the season.

Against the Hawks, Western opened action by claiming the doubles point, marking the first doubles point victory for Western this season. Arianna Demos and Nicole Jones kicked things off with a 6-1 victory at the No. 2 position and the duo of Courtney Lubbers and Jenna Wallace picked up a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreaker victory at the top doubles spot to secure the point. The two victories were crucial, as Western was forced to forfeit the No. 3 doubles match.

"Today our girls played great doubles and we were finally able to win the doubles point," said head coach Raquel Allen. "The great play led us to have a much better start for singles."

Once singles action began, the Leathernecks picked up three victories form the top three positions to secure the team's second victory of the season. Lubbers took on Amy Kuhle at the No. 1 spot, and secured a straight sets victory, 6-4, 6-3. Demos followed with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Sydney Lynch at the No. 2 spot, and Wallace picked up a three set victory over Elizabeth Kuenzi in the No. 3 slot. After dropping the first set, 3-6, Wallace bounced back with claim the second and third sets, 6-2, 6-4.

With the victory for Western clinched, Jones dropped a two-set match at No. 4 (6-3, 6-4) and Andriana Johnson fell, 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 5 position. The final match at No. 6 was forfeited by the Leathernecks.

"We played really well we were very strong mentally," added Allen. When you play outdoors it can be tricky because of the wind. I am very proud of our accomplishments this weekend, our girls really fought hard this past week and deserved the wins that they got today."

After a short break, Western began its second match of the day against Monmouth, a 6-1 Leatherneck victory. The duos of Lubbers/Wallace (6-0) and Demos/Jones (6-1) picked up doubles wins at the top two positions, respectively, to secure the doubles point for the Purple and Gold. The third match was forfeited by Western.

It was all Leathernecks in singles action, as all five Leathernecks who hit the courts in singles won in straight sets, dropping one total game. Lubbers, Demos, Wallace, and Jones all took home 6-0, 6-0 decisions at spots one through four. Johnson dopped one game in her 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 5 spot. The No. 6 spot was forfeited by Western.

The Leathernecks return to the courts next Sunday, March 29, for their final home match this season. Western Illinois will take on Denver in a Summit League contest, with first serve taking place at 9 a.m. at the WIU Tennis Facility.
