Leathernecks Head For House of Champions

Western Illinois to compete in three-day meet in Indianapolis

MACOMB, Ill. – Following victories for both the men's and women's squads over Valparaiso on Nov. 5, the Western Illinois swimming and diving teams head to Indianapolis Friday to compete in the three-day House of Champions Invitational. Action begins each day at the IUPUI Natatorium from Friday through Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Evening sessions will be at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 5 p.m. on Sunday.

"We definitely just rely on the amount of work we've put in," said Western Illinois head coach Greg Naumann. "And we've seen the results at this point in time. We've seen people getting faster each meet. We've got kids swimming faster than what they did the year before at this point in time of the season. I'm pretty happy with where we're at."

At last year's House of Champions, Chris Neaveill and Matt Abercrombie raced to overall event wins in the 100-fly and 1650-free, respectively.

This season, Neaveill ranks in the top 10 in The Summit League in both the 100-fly (6th/51.77) and 200-free (7th/52.13), while Abercrombie is 10th in the 200-back (1:57.89). Meanwhile, JD Furr's 57.20 time in the 100 breast is the second-best in the league. Western Illinois also has top individual times in the 200-IM from John Hall (8th/1:57.98) and Dylon Rykosky (9th/1:58.44). In the 400-IM, Hall's 4:12.90 time is fourth, with Abercrombie (5th/4:21.40) and Jerod Dyke (10th/4:33.99) just trailing.

The Leathernecks' relay squads have posted seven top times in the women's 200-free, 400-free, 200-medley, 400-medley and men's 200-free, 400-free, 800-free, 200-medley and 400-medley. The team of Chris Neaveill, Cameron Van De Velde, JD Furr and Tyler Neaveill own the best time in the league in the 400-medley relay at 3:30.83.

Viktor Rusenas is fifth in the conference with a 273.15 score in the men's 3-meter and 10th with a 224.80 score in the 1-meter. Melanie Pearson has a 10th-place score at 208.05 in the women's 1-meter.
