Western Dominates in Shots, but Falls to Fort Wayne in Summit League Opener

The Leathernecks took 26 shots and limited the Mastodons to two

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team opened up Summit League play on Friday, October 2, against Fort Wayne in Macomb, Illinois. Despite dominating in offensive play, the Leathernecks dropped the match to the Mastodons by a score of 1-0 to fall to 1-8-0 on the season. With the victory, Fort Wayne moves to 3-8-1 on the year.

Eleven different Western Illinois players took a total of 26 shots throughout the match, and the Leatherneck defense limited Fort Wayne to just two.

"We dominated the game from start to finish in every way. We out-passed and out-desired them," said head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites. "Our team performed very, very well and it's hard to stomach that loss when every player played fantastic. We have to find a way to win, this is not a team that reflects their record."

Skyler Jessop took her first of five shots in the third minute, forcing Fort Wayne's keeper Kiley Dunning to make her first of 10 saves.

The action was in Fort Wayne's territory for the majority of the first half. Daniela Salinas, Gina Scaffidi, and Carly Hoffman would all take shots that just barely missed the net. Brianna Hughes also put two dangerous shots on goal in the 26th and 37th minute.

Meagan Wilson and Jessop put shots on target as the play clock ran out for the first half. With 45 minutes in the books, the Leathernecks and the Mastodons were scoreless.

Fort Wayne's Erin Gill took the Mastodon's first shot of the match in the 51st minute, but Victoria Kappel was there to make the stop.

Western's offensive attack continued to stay strong as Kayla Kirkwood launched a shot that was directly on target, but Dunning was there to make another save.

Following a Leatherneck foul, Kallianne Mogler took a free kick that bounced off the defense and to the foot of Rachel Good who found the back of the net and the Mastodons would take a 1-0 lead in the 64th minute.

The Purple and Gold battled back and took ten more shots in the remainder of the second half, but were unable to capitalize on any opportunities and the Mastodons would take the Summit League opener by a score of 1-0.

"I'm in shock. We were the better team in every category and we dominated the game," added Flogaites. "For the game to come down to that one second for them, it's the cruelest of losses this season so far. We took chance after chance after chance, and we outshot them 26-2 and have nothing to show for it."

Western will be back in action on Sunday, October 4, as they close out nonleague play against Indiana State at home at 1 p.m.
