Leathernecks Fall to Indiana State, 2-1

Skyler Jessop snaps Western's shutout streak with early second half goal

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team wrapped up non-league play against Indiana State on Sunday, October 4, in Macomb, Illinois. An early second-half goal from Skyler Jessop was not enough, as the Leathernecks fell to the Sycamores by a score of 2-1 to move to 1-9-0 on the season.

"I thought we conceded two goals early that were basically gifts for them. They came against the run of play and we were poor for both goals," said head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites. "It's difficult from top to bottom we were the best team in both games (this weekend) but there are no excuses for anything. We cannot continue to take a million and a half chances without scoring goals. The goal Skyler scored was easy, I don't understand why we can't do that in every match. We only start playing hard when we are down one or two goals, but the buck stops at my desk and I'm responsible for the results and the way that we perform and I'm obviously going to have to take a closer look at what I'm doing."

Offensive play got off to a quick start, as Indiana State's Maddie Orf put a shot right on target in the third minute but Victoria Kappel made the stop. Kappel had five saves on the afternoon.

Daniela Salinas quickly responded with a shot on goal of her own, but ISU's keeper Brittany San Roman made the stop. Salinas would take another crack at it in the 30th minute, forcing San Roman to make her second of five saves. Salinas would end the match with four shots on goal.

The Sycamores struck first in the 41st minute off the foot of Orf from 15 yards out to take the 1-0 lead. Following a Western Illinois foul in the 43rd minute, Elly Freesmeier fed the ball to Sydney Lovelace who put the ball in the net to extend the Sycamores lead to 2-0 going into halftime.

Early in the second half, Mary Street fed the ball to Jessop who took the ball down field and went one-on-one with the keeper to find the back of the net. Jessop's second goal of the season went flying into the left corner of the net to bring the score within one.

The remainder of the second half was a physical battle. Carly Hoffman and Salinas put two back-to-back shots on frame but Brittany San Roman was there for each of them. Kappel shutout the Sycamores the entire second half, recording two more saves.

"I thought Victoria was quite good, she made some key saves. They could have scored a few more but she was on top of her game and that was a really strong performance," said Flogaites. "The hard part is in a game like that you lose sight of good performances because you're only focused on losing, but there we some players that had good games but it's hard to pick them out. We're only interested in finding 11 players playing well at the same time and finding a way to win."

Western travels to Oral Roberts next Sunday (Oct. 11) in Summit League play. First kick is scheduled for 1 p.m.
